Thoughts
of a visit to Australia's heartland conjures up images of mysterious
landscapes dotted with majestic mountain ranges, deep coloured gorges,
wide sandy river beds lined with ancient gums, multicoloured ochre,
rock art sites, brilliant red sand dunes covered with golden Spinifex
& sunset on the rock.
All
these things await us, however it's where else we go & the extra
things that we see & do along the way that really adds to the
experience. The West McDonald Ranges are explored over 5 days &
here you may decide to take a helicopter flight over one of the
canyons. As well there are a multitude of walking trails, all with
their own reward at the end. We also visit the less known East McDonald
Ranges where we visit the more isolated gorge country & soak
up the history of this area. Isolated stock routes in central Queensland
& an outback cattle station provide an insight into life on
the land. Camp oven dinner under the stars, perhaps a succulent
steak at an iconic pub
We
travel via remote beef roads that exist for road train access to
just a few remote properties. In the Northern Territory these are
linked by 4WD routes, which see few travellers. There are many remote
tracks to satisfy those 4wd enthusiasts including the Palm Valley
track, Cattle Water Pass, Fink Gorge & the Old Ghan track (the
route of the famous Fink Desert race)
Bring
a fishing rod. There are campsites on the banks of the Georgina
River & Cooper's creek. Perhaps you will get lucky at Diamantina
lakes.
The
journey begins at Charleville central Queensland & an early
arrival is recommended if you can arrange it. Here you can check
out the local attractions such as the cosmos centre or see the Bilbies.
There are many points of interest before the Northern Territory
boarder including a day at Wyreanna station.
The Plenty Highway takes us to Alice Springs for a well-earned rest.
The route home is one of the major highlights. The colours are very
beautiful in this part of the world & this is truly one of the
greatest drives you will ever do.
